Landfarming

Landfarming, also known as land treatment or land application, is an above-ground remediation technology for soils that reduces concentrations of constituents through biodegradation.

Landfarming must also be considered as a final deposition since the decomposed substances mix with the ground and the vegetation present.

The difference between land treatment and landfarming is that landfarming implies developing farming techniques  that incorporate oxygen maximizing biological removal.

The group has a landfarming site in Bahía Blanca, on a field that is over 2,471.05 acers, therefore considered to be the most important one in the country.

The site is on Route nº33 and is unique.  Annual rain is under 600 mm per year, local geographic ground distinctiveness is that the layers of soil do not allow for lixiviation of degraded products towards auriferous, absence of superficial water and distance from urban centers make IPES SA a unique installation.

Landfarming permits managing exclusive parcels for each client.  These parcels are coded and monitored through periodic degradation control processes.  Once degradation has occurred, parcel liberation is requested from the Secretaría de Política Ambiental.  Because of this, the waste generator can monitor the exclusive treatment process given that batches of waste from different sources are never mixed.

Types of waste that can be treated through this technology:
  • Waste from the dairy, meatpacking and general food industry.
  • Waste from the oil industry.
  • Waste from the chemical and pharmaceutical industry.
  • Residue from the bottom of tanks and barrels of the fuel industry in general.
  • Contaminated grounds due to oil spills.
