Landfill
Landfill is a process in which special industrial waste is stored under controlled conditions to avoid contact and migration with the environment, ground, water and atmosphere. |

Landfill must be considered as a last technological alternative measure when the process to eliminate or reduce risk conditions have not resulted efficiently.
Under regulation of the Provincia de Buenos Aires, Law Nº 11.720 and regulation Nº 806/97 secure landfills must be done in areas that are remote from urban centers which is why Bahía Blanca was chosen as the site for IPES S.A. The following aspects were taken into consideration:
- Local geology that guaranteed no contaminant migration.
- Hidrogeología con profundidad del acuífero freático. Depth of water in the area.
- Low rate of annual rain to minimize lixivation.
- Minimum exposure to superficial water.
- Easy access by roads and trains.
- Qualified human resources for the different operative stages.
In every secure landfill, liners form a fundamental aspect to be considered and law 806/97 establishes a construction procedure to be followed.
Liners must be designed, built and installed in order to prevent waste and its subproducts to migrate outside the landfill. Its continuance must be guaranteed by a lanfills’s sealing and post sealing plan.

| Materials used for construction guarantee: |
- Resistance to different grades of pressure in the cells.
- Resistance to waste deposited and lixivation.
- Resistance to changes in climate condition.
- Resistance to the influence of installation landfill tasks.

Following local law and those established by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, since the operation bases decisions on these, a double liner was selected by IPES S.A. and it works as follows:

| La operación de relleno de seguridad se realiza de acuerdo al manual de operaciones, el que comprende los siguientes aspectos: |
- Manual de garantía de calidad en la instalación del sistema de impermeabilización .
- Manual de operaciones para la aceptación y disposición final de residuos.
- Manual de operaciones para el cierre de operaciones.
- Manual de operaciones post-cierre.
- Plan de monitoreo durante la operación y etapa de post-cierre.

En la operación del relleno de seguridad se generan líquidos lixiviados los cuales se colectan por el sistema primario y se bombean a un tanque de almacenamiento ubicado en el mismo predio, de allí se envían a una planta de tratamiento para remover la carga orgánica y demás sustancias que los componen, el agua tratada se utiliza en el mismo local para las actividades propias del sitio y riego de parques.
Los barros se envían a tratamiento de estabilización para su posterior disposición final en el mismo relleno. |
