Remediation and in Situ Services

The use of industrial grounds during long periods led to, in many cases, the inadequate management of waste and toxic substances without the proper environmental practices.  Because of this, it is becoming more frequent to find industrial ground with contaminated grounds as well as underground and surface water.

Desler has developed vast experience in managing different technological alternatives to induce  remediation of contaminated  areas and treatments in situ.

Managing these situations requires technological capacity to:

  • Determine, through environmental monitoring, the presence of contaminants, to what degree and what exactly has been contaminated.
  • Evaluate contamination sources and design preventive actions to make sure the situation does not worsen.
  • Determine what actions to follow for the ground’s remediation.

Remediation actions of contaminated areas require careful design.  Because of this, the characteristics of the contaminants and the affected grounds and aquiferous must be evaluated in order to determine the type of treatment that is required.  This is done by taking into account the environmental risks that are present in each place.  For this reason, each area to be evaluated must be considered as being unique.

Summirizing, the technological operation process for a remediation process can be grouped as follows:
  • Transforming the means
  • Extracting contaminants and treating ex situ
  • Immobilizing the means
  • Contention or confinement
The most developed technologies that are employed for in situ remediations include the following physical and chemical proceses:
  • Biodegradation (Bioventing / Landfarming / Biopila)
  • Excavation and treatment off site
  • Chemical oxidation
  • Stabilization / solidification
  • Air stripping
  • Soil vapor extraction
  • Thermal desorption
  • Washing grounds / soil
  • Thermal destruction

Each technique has to be analyzed in context regarding the contaminated site, the type of contaminant and exactly has been contaminated (ground, water or both).

In diverse occasions, it may be necessary to obtain adequate segregation, pre-treatment or even treat waste on the same installations where they generated or are being stored. In view of this, the Industrial Services division has provided and used DESLER’s – IPES’ vast experience in managing waste by providing services in situ or onsite.  In order to do this, the necessary equipment is installed to correctly manage each case.

Desler Industrial Services has provided large scale diverse treatment in situ and onsite to different sites affected by different contaminants.
